Schermereiland route

With the exception of a side trip through the Schermer, this route goes tightly around the former Schermer Island. Due to subsidence and sea level rise, the sea penetrated deep into the land in the 12th century. Huge lakes were created: the Schermer to the west, the Beemster to the east and the Starnmeer to the south. In between, the Schermereiland was preserved. This island was already diked in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and, with its countless ditches, historic villages and special nature, forms a beautiful contrast with the geometry of the Schermer and Beemster reclaimed lands.
