Description

This area has been extensively excavated due to peat extraction. Now you see lakes, ponds, canals, vast reed fields and flowery hay fields. In the middle of the beautiful old Dwarsgracht you can admire one of the thickest and oldest ash trees in the Netherlands, the tree was planted around 1800. Giethoorn is the cultural-historical pearl on your route: this picturesque village with its beautiful houses is also called the Venice of the North. The region around Nijeveen and Ruinerwold is also a former peat area. Here you cycle past old farms and vast meadows. You then look out over the first Pitch & Putt course that was built in Ruinerwold in 1998. This 18-hole course is beautifully embedded in the landscape. Length differences and obstacles such as sand bunkers, trees and ponds make every hole challenging and unique.
