Sneek, Heeg and Oudega

Sneek is located near the Sneekermeer, which is an El Dorado for breeding birds. The godwit, lapwing, yellow wagtail and summer teal like to build their nests here and of course reed birds such as the bluethroat, sedge warbler, little reed warbler and bittern are completely in their element here. In winter you will find thousands of geese here. What really makes Sneek special is its historic city center, which was the capital of Friesland from 1498 to 1500. The city center of Sneek was even the first city in Friesland to be completely walled in 1492. The city's oldest district is located in the heart of the town and the entire city center is a protected cityscape. There are many historic buildings and elements that are reminiscent of the heyday of the trading city, of which the Water Gate is the best known. The gate is located in part of the old wall and consists of two octagonal towers. A bridge has been constructed between them and the gatekeeper's house is located above that bridge.
