Description
Your route starts at Camping & Guesthouse De Brembroeken. Further on you drive through the Groeningse and Vortumse Bergen, a narrow belt of river dunes on the Maas. Badger dens are hidden in the copses. Thousands of years ago, the Maas flowed on the other side of the dunes and the west wind blew the sand high up here. The area is part of the Maasheggen, the oldest agricultural landscape in the Netherlands and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Here you see hawthorn and blackthorn hedges, ideal for keeping cattle in place. The densely woven hedges gave the Romans a lot of headaches, they could not advance here as massively as they were used to! You will also discover the nice Venray, here you will find plenty of history. Be sure to admire the Gothic Grote Kerk from the fifteenth century.
