Berkheide is a small but important coastal area near Katwijk. With the development of the dunes from the year 1100 onwards, the landscape can be called young. The area is open and calcareous and the subsoil of Berkheide consists of clay. In the north of the dune area many plants are found, such as eared silene, small rattle, stinking ballote, rough millet grass and bitterweed broomrape. This is a so-called sea village and grassland vegetation. Water rail, bluethroat, stonechat and the almost disappeared wheatear breed between the dunes and in the grassy grasslands, while the foraging of the sand lizard and the natterjack toad are accompanied by the chirping of the blue-winged grasshopper.
