During this cycle tour you cycle through an open and wide landscape that was once a large lake area. One of the lakes that were located here, but which was last drained between 1633 and 1635, is the Schermeer, from which the area owes its name. The drainage of the Schermer and Schermereiland is done in a different way than most reclaimed land in North Holland. Like everywhere else, the polder was drained by mills, but in terms of water management, the Schermer was drained in a different way. First of all, a dike was constructed and (internal) reservoirs were dug. The mills were placed there. But the most beautiful and impressive sight you will encounter during this cycle tour is undoubtedly the historic Fort Marken-Binnen. The fortress was built to defend the Markervaart and the banks of the Westwouderpolder and the Stierop. Yet the fort is fairly isolated, because there used to be no direct connecting road to other forts. Near the fortress there is a secondary battery and an inlet culvert, which clearly shows its defensive function. In 2013, the fort is used by RBOC'Fort Markenbinnen\\\'; an education and training center for fire brigades and emergency services.
