Description

Your cycling route starts with a cup of coffee at Hotel Restaurant De Wapser Herberg. From here you dive into the stream valley landscape of the Vledder Aa. In Wapserveen there is a bell tower from the sixteenth century. This bell tower, a cheap alternative to the expensive church tower, is the last original example in Drenthe. You also pass through Steenwijk. This old, former fortified town has more than 60 national monuments, including De Markt and the city canals. Steenwijk was located in a strategic location during the Eighty Years' War, which meant that there were regular battles. The name of De Eese Estate was first mentioned in 1241. There is an old castle on the estate from 1619 (not open to the public). Below Frederiksoord you have a beautiful view over the vast grasslands and arable lands along the Vledder Aa stream.
