Donk, Dendermonde and Nieuwbroek

The Donkmeer is a beautiful lake near the village of Donk. It is approximately 86 hectares in size, making it the second largest lake in Flanders. Near the water is an animal park with an authentic, historic duck decoy. Since the late seventeenth century, when peat was extracted in the area, the area experienced strong economic growth. Another famous Belgian place is Dendermonde. Excavations showed that there was already a settlement here around 800 BC. In the current village, which is highly urbanized, there are many buildings and mansions from the Middle Ages. The beautiful fourteenth-century town hall is built in Gothic style. Don't forget to visit the archaeological museum, where the folklore and history of Dendermonde is exhibited. The showpiece of the collection is the complete and 28,000-year-old skeleton of a mammoth.
