Donk, Dendermonde and Nieuwbroek

The Donkmeer is a beautiful lake near the village of Donk. It is approximately 86 hectares in size, making it the second largest lake in Flanders. There is a zoo with an authentic, historic duck decoy near the water. Since the late seventeenth century, when peat was extracted in the area, the area has experienced strong economic growth. Another well-known Belgian place is Dendermonde. Excavations have shown that there was already a settlement here around 800 BC. In the current village, which is heavily urbanized, there are many buildings and mansions from the Middle Ages. The beautiful fourteenth-century town hall was built in Gothic style. Don't forget to visit the archaeological museum, where the folklore and history of Dendermonde is exhibited. The showpiece of the collection is the complete and 28,000-year-old skeleton of a mammoth.
