Description

Leiden is referred to as Key City - referring to the city coat of arms with a white shield and two crossed red keys. The history of the city dates back to at least the year 860, when it was still a dike village built at the foot of an artificial hill. Today's Leiden is primarily a center of scientific knowledge and new technology. It is not without reason that Leiden is home to the oldest university in the Netherlands. On this tour you will not only experience the large-scale cities, but you will also get to know the smaller villages, such as Roelofarendsveen. This small village supplies 25 percent of the Dutch tulip production. Every year during the fair there is a beautiful flower parade, a parade with floats decorated with flowers. The village is also aptly called 'the tulip of the Randstad' because of its tulip production. And you cross a beautiful system of peat lakes near Leiden: the Kagerplassen. It is the oldest water sports area in the Netherlands and the sailing, rowing and motor sports club De Kaag provides the necessary life here. This association has had a significant significance in the development of water tourism around the lakes and in the area you will be immersed in a hospitable and relaxed atmosphere. The route starts at Profile De Klokpoort. If there is something wrong with your bike or if you want to have your bike checked, this is your perfect opportunity. With your bicycle discount pass you get a 10.00 euro discount on maintenance and repairs. You can start your cycling tour with a bicycle that is in tip-top condition. In Oude Ade you can view the Vrouw Venne mill. This seesaw mill was built in 1835, but originally dates from the seventeenth century. In 1835, Vrouw Venne was almost completely renovated and in 1954 an electric pumping station was installed, after the king's spindle was broken. In 1961, the mill fell into disrepair and was bought by the Rijnlandse Molenstichting, which had it restored in 1963. Another restoration took place in 1998. Then you cycle towards Jachthaven de Bresem NV. This marina is a perfect place to enjoy a drink on the terrace when the weather is nice. Many water sports enthusiasts enjoy sailing and windsurfing here when the weather is nice, which creates a pleasant atmosphere. Or you can view the beautiful boats that are anchored there. There is always something to see in the cozy marina.
