Description
The dune area near Castricum is part of the North Holland Dune Reserve (5300 ha), which extends over 20 km along the coast. The area is of great importance for drinking water extraction, because pre-purified Rhine and IJsselmeer water is infiltrated in the dunes and recovered after approximately one month. The area was forested with Scots pine at the beginning of the 20th century.

To cycle the route you need a day ticket for the North Holland Dune Reserve (approx. € 1.80 pp, www.pwn.nl). This is available at the payment machines (with PIN, credit card or Myorder) at the entrances to the area at P Geversduin (junction 35) and at Johanna\\\'s Hof (junction 15). These so-called PWN dune maps can also be purchased at VVV Castricum (closed on Sundays).
