Heathlands, fens, sand drifts and forests, you will find it all across the Belgian border south of Roosendaal. Take a trip around Essen in Belgium and get to know the natural beauty and charming villages that can be found here.
The Kalmthoutse Heide
This route takes you along the edge of the Kalmthoutse Heide. This nature reserve covers approximately 3,750 hectares and you will find both tourist areas that are well visited by cyclists and walkers and quiet areas on the back paths. Whatever you are looking for, you will find it in this beautiful nature reserve. In this area, trees are regularly cut down and the humus-rich top layer of the soil is removed so that all plants have the opportunity to further develop and grow. Galloway cattle and sheep also ensure that certain areas are well grazed. On the edge of this area you will find Wildert, a small village with about 40 houses.
Tavern & Tennis Essen
Before you cycle into Wildert, you can take a break at Taverne & Tennis Essen. Sit down on the terrace or in the tavern itself and enjoy a tasty snack and a drink. Then you get back on your bike, completely rested and refreshed.
The last bit of peat
From Wildert you cycle back across the border to Achtmaal in Brabant. Around this village you will find extensive agricultural areas and watercourses that were originally dug to drain extracted peat. A remnant of the peat can still be found in the Matjens nature reserve, but otherwise this landscape type has completely disappeared here.
