During this cycle route of more than 45 kilometers you can enjoy the Zeeland landscape on the Walcheren peninsula and cycle past Middelburg, Vlissingen and Zoutelande. The Walcheren National Landscape shows you the best that Zeeland has to offer.
Beautiful Middelburg
The cycle route starts in Biggekerke, from where you continue to Middelburg. During your bike ride you will pass windmill De Hoop in Middelburg. The windmill was built in 1735 as a hulling mill. De Hoop remained in operation until 1920, but then it was converted into a flour factory and an electric motor was installed.
Fort Rammekes
Further on, at the mouth of the former Welzinge canal that gave access to the port of Middelburg, is Fort Rammekens. The fort used to be called Zeeburg and in 1496 it was not yet a fort, but a bay where ships moored. It is the oldest surviving sea fortress in Western Europe. Fort Rammekens was built in 1547 to protect and control the busy shipping routes to Antwerp and Middelburg.
Zeeland nature
From Vlissingen you cycle on to Zoutelande, and then drive back to Biggekerke. During this route you will get to know the Zeuswe landscape. The oldest parts of the landscape are the historic row of dunes, the creek ridges and pools formed by low, open basin areas. These beautiful natural features remind you that the area once belonged to the sea.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
