Description

This route takes you along part of the 135 kilometer long defense line, the Defense Line of Amsterdam. On this route you will become acquainted with forts of this line and historic mills. The defense line was intended to stop enemy attacks, but in the end the threatening effect alone was sufficient to prevent attacks completely. For example, you can take a look at Fort bij Spijkerboor. This fort served, among other things, as a prison for conscientious objectors and NSB members. You will also discover centuries-old mills, such as the Tweede Broeker from 1631. The last fort you pass is the Fort at Krommeniedijk. This fort was used as a fortification between 1897 and 1956. Stop off in Heemskerk at LAURENTZ UIT&EATEN for a snack and a drink!
