This route takes you along part of the 135-kilometer-long Defense Line of Amsterdam. Along the way, you'll discover the forts of this line and historic windmills. The defense line was intended to ward off enemy attacks, but ultimately, the threat alone was enough to completely prevent them. You can visit Fort bij Spijkerboor, for example. This fort served as a prison for conscientious objectors and members of the NSB (National Socialist Movement). You'll also discover centuries-old windmills, such as the Tweede Broeker (Second Broeker) from 1631. The last fort you'll visit is Fort bij Krommeniedijk, which was used as a fortification between 1897 and 1956.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
