Description

Historic Brielle is a place where cultural history is kept alive, because the city has still well preserved its old defenses. The old city walls, nine bastions, five ravelins, an eighteenth-century gatekeeper's house and a furnished harbor battery with a bomb-proof guardhouse and many bunkers have been preserved and give Brielle the authenticity of an old fortified city. Although the atmosphere in Maassluis is very different, this city is also ideal for a bike ride. Maassluis was founded around 1340 as a small settlement, which mainly lived from fishing. In the nineteenth century, Maassluis became world famous for a towing company and the activities on the water expanded to include ship salvage, for example. The National Towage Museum can still be found in the town, but a company has also established itself there that has been providing information services in and around the port of Rotterdam since 1872. The cycle tour takes you past two beautiful windmills. The first one you encounter is called'De Hoop\\\' and is located in Rozenburg. The flour mill was built in 1887 as a replacement for a mill from 1658 that stood at a different location in the village. De Hoop milled grain until the 1960s, but then it came to a standstill, causing the mill to fall into disrepair. After restoration work, the ground floor was adapted as a wedding location and the miller's house serves as the antiquities room of the Rozenburg historical association. The other mill you see along the way is the Wippersmolen in Maassluis. The polder mill was installed in 1726 so that the Sluispolder continued to be drained. The predecessor of the Wippersmolen, a seesaw mill that stood on the same site, had fallen into irreparable disrepair. In 1926 the ground sailor was modernized with a diesel engine, which was replaced a few years later by a cylinder engine. Since the installation of the last engine, the round stone mill only runs for decoration. The start and end point of the route is at Camping de Krabbeplaat. Whether you are looking for peace and space or enjoy water recreation, De Krabbeplaat is the right place for fun and togetherness. The nice family campsite is located in a wooded area on the Brielse Meer. You can explore the vastness of the vast polders, or go to historic towns.
