Description

Vincent van Gogh, a world-famous artist, was born and grew up in Zundert, Brabant, in 1853. Despite his deep love for nature and the Brabant countryside, Vincent was also attracted to the vibrancy and temptations of the big city. Discover the 48 km long Van Gogh cycle route that takes you past Van Gogh's highlights in and around Tilburg. The route leads past Vincent's former drawing school, the Palace-Council House, and brings you close to his former boarding house. Both places are marked as Van Gogh Monuments.

On September 15, 1866, the then thirteen-year-old Vincent van Gogh was registered in the Tilburg population register. After primary school in Zundert and two years of boarding school in Zevenbergen, Vincent became a student at the Rijks-HBS Koning Willem II, now the Palace-Council House (starting point of this cycle route). This is where the young Van Gogh received his first real drawing lessons. In the second year, Vincent left HBS early for unknown reasons and was then at home for a while. When Vincent was sixteen, he got a job at the Hague art dealership Goupil & Cie. His 'Uncle Cent' was co-owner.

In the textile city of Tilburg, the home weavers left a lasting impression on Van Gogh. Later he visited it again in Nuenen to serve as a model. The oppressive indoor scenes that he depicted there - including those with the potato eaters - are among the most powerful works from his Brabant period.
