Description
Cycling through the Weerribben-Wieden National Park you can fully enjoy the calm waters, but also the activity in various marinas. This tour takes you through one of the most important wetlands in Europe, formed by the Wieden and Weerribben.
Along the Beulakerwijde
The first part of this route takes you to Blokzijl and on to Sint-Jansklooster. You cycle along the Beulakerwijde, the largest lake in the Kop van Overijssel. This lake was created by storm surge disasters in 1775, 1776 and 1825. It used to be a peat area around the village of Beulake. The land strips were swept away during the storm surge, creating the lake - and the village of Beulake disappeared. A little further on you will find the Monnikenmolen from 1857. Furthermore, in the last part of the route you can take a break with a snack and a drink at Cafe Restaurant Botenverhuur Smit Giethoorn.
A trip to Giethoorn
Near the end of this tour you will find the lovely water village of Giethoorn. Take a boat trip here or make some extra kilometers by bike to see this attraction with your own eyes. This water-rich town full of bridges is sometimes called the'Venice of the Netherlands\\\'. You simply have to experience that!
