Description

Today you will go on a trip to De Marne, where you can clearly see that the Dutch have been battling the rising water for centuries. The Lauwersmeer was created on the border of Friesland and Groningen in 1969, when the Lauwerszee was closed off. Because nature in the National Park often goes its own way, trees and shrubs overgrow the landscape. In this way, the area slowly becomes overgrown and a swampy forest develops. Scottish highlanders and Konik horses keep the area open. You will also see two beautiful churches. The Reformed Church in Kloosterburen dates from 1843 and has a saddleback tower. The Former Reformed Church in Hornhuizen, built in the thirteenth century, is also a picture.
