Description

Today you will visit De Marne, where you can clearly see that the Dutch have been battling the rising water for centuries. The Lauwersmeer was created on the border of Friesland and Groningen in 1969, when the Lauwerszee was closed. Because nature often goes its own way in the National Park, trees and shrubs roughen the landscape. In this way, the area slowly grows dense and a swamp-like forest is created. Scottish highlanders and Konik horses keep the area open. You will also see two beautiful churches. The Reformed Church in Kloosterburen dates from 1843 and has a gable roof tower. The former reformed church in Hornhuizen, built in the thirteenth century, is also beautiful.
