Tour around the Peel from Meijel

De Peel was formed on a sandy plain with impermeable clay layers beneath. Because rainwater pooled, sphagnum peat formed. In the past, the raised bog covered about 30,000 hectares; now, only De Groote Peel National Park remains. Traces of peat extraction add not only a cultural-historical dimension but also a landscape one: nature has become more varied, and large pools, small peat pits, and Peel canals have formed. These attract rare butterflies and dragonflies. Stop by Buitencentrum De Pelen to learn more about the area and perhaps take a short walk into the national park! Your route then leads you through charming villages. Meijel is a larger town, well worth a stop.
