Hoeksche Waard, South Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 117456
Provided by: Groots Genieten
Cycling in the shadow of the Rotterdam port area is surprisingly quiet. From the Hoeksche Waard you drive towards the Spui, a tidal river that was created by a flood in the sixteenth century. You cross the water, and a little later you drive along the bank of the Bernisse. This old arm of the river separates the islands of Voorne and Putten. The historic heart of Geervliet enjoys a protected village view. Here you will see the village church from 1307 and the Bernisse Mill, a flour mill from 1851 that was built on a former defense tower. In Spijkenisse you pass another flour mill: the Nooitgedacht from 1861. Then you cycle along the rippling water of the Oude Maas to the ferry that takes you to Oud-Beijerland. Enjoy a meal at Brasserie de Greup.
