You cycle on a car-free road through a characteristic Dutch polder of vast meadows, ditches and pollard willows. A little later you pass Arkel, a village on the Linge. Just before junction 39 you will see a domed church from 1855. You will cycle along the Merwede Canal to Gorinchem, a well-preserved fortified town. At Uitspanning Mini Camping De Leuve Hoeve you are welcome for a coffee with homemade apple pie on the cozy terrace. You cycle back to the Linge, where you can take a break BY't VEER. Sights

Wester inundatie- en keersluis

4147 BE West Betuwe

This Wester inundation and flood barrier functioned both as a sluice and as a storage place for weapons during the New Dutch Waterline in the nineteenth century.

Vestingwallen Asperen

Gruttersdam 23
4147 CD West Betuwe

You can see from these ramparts that Asperen was originally a fortified town. For a long time Asperen was a manor in the possession of the Lords of Arkel. However, between 1401 and 1412 they came into conflict with their feudal lord, the count of Holland, as a result of which the Arkel areas came into the hands of Holland. It was not until 1989 that Asperen became part of Gelderland due to pushbacks.

Voormalig kasteel Asperen

1
4147 AN West Betuwe

The former Asperen castle was blown up by the French during the disaster year of 1672. The French King Louis XIV aimed for natural borders for his empire and tried to get hold of the southern part of the Netherlands up to the rivers. The Republic of the Seven United Netherlands slowed down the French in their advance by deliberate submerging (inundation). This war strategy proved so successful that the water lines were expanded. The current town hall of Asperen and the pond are now roughly on the same spot as the castle once stood.
