Stichtse Vecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 117372
Provided by: Waterlinies 2015
Around Utrecht you cycle past several forts from the New Dutch Waterline. There are of course plenty of cultural history sights to spot in Utrecht itself.
Fort Ruigenhoek
The route starts near the Maarsseveens Plassen, a beautiful tranquil nature reserve. Fort De Gagel is the first fortress on your route: it was built around 1820. The fort is publicly accessible, so it's a nice break! In the Ruigenhoek recreation area you can not only enjoy the varied natural beauty, but you can also admire the fort of the same name from 1870. It is a quadrangle with bastions, bomb-proof barracks, depots and group shelters. Staatsbosbeheer regularly organizes guided tours of the fort.
Fort Voordorp
The Geesina is a beautiful flour mill from 1843. Further on you will pass Fort Voordorp and the Fort at Rijnauwen, which is now a nature reserve. In the polder on the outskirts of Utrecht you can stop at Star Lodge Hotels for a refreshing pit stop. Then you drive through the historic heart of Utrecht. Feel free to dismount and view all those beautiful buildings at your leisure. Fort aan de Klop originally dates back to 1629!
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
