Historic rows of dunes, creek ridges and pools. A sharp contrast unfolds before your eyes between the openness of the pools and the ascending vegetation of the dune edges, creek ridges and the young polders: Walcheren National Landscape shows you the best that Zeeland has to offer.

The area once belonged to the sea and people have always had to work hard to literally keep their heads above water. The vliedbergen, which were five to twelve meters high, are probably the remains of old motte-and-bailey castles. The altitude provided people with a place to flee to when the sea reclaimed land.

You follow the dunes to Vlissingen and Oost-Souburg, where the De Pere mill was built. The flour mill was placed in 1725 to replace a post mill and milled on wind power until 1966. A modern milling installation was then installed. A professional miller still grinds grain daily with the round stone scaffolding mill.

In Biggekerke there is a ground sailer that was built in 1712 on behalf of the municipality of Vlissingen. Officially this flour mill has no name, but the mill came into the possession of the Brasser family in 1916 and still is in 2013. A subtle reference to the history with the municipality of Vlissingen can still be found on the millbeard. The image of a bottle has been cut out on a decorative plate, which refers to the coat of arms of Vlissingen. The'Brasser mill\\\' is still in operation daily and supplies flour for many bread and baking products.

The most famous windmill type in the Netherlands. Windmills were not only used to produce flour from cereals, but also for draining polder areas. Natural energy. The most famous windmills can be found in Kinderdijk, which have truly been set up as a polder model. A must see!
