Tour of Vierhouten and Vaassen

In the Vierhouter Bos you will find plenty of variety. Because the best trunks were cleared for wood here for centuries, the whimsical oaks were left standing. You will also see majestic beeches that are more than 200 years old. In the middle of the forest lies the Verscholen Dorp, a hiding place from 1943. About eighty refugees were hidden here for more than a year. Near Vaassen you will come across historical places. The sixteenth-century Kasteel de Cannenburgh was built on the remains of an earlier, probably fourteenth-century castle. Nearby lies the wonderfully authentic hamlet of Niersen, a typical Veluwe es- or enkneder settlement. Niersen is very old, it was first mentioned around 1335 as the'marka Niirsen\\\'.
