Tour of the dolmens: Gieten, Schoonloo and Grolloo

Your route starts at Boerderijcamping De Jobinghoeve Grolloo. Hunebed D20 and Hunebed D19 are located near the village of Drouwen. These two dolmens are the first to be subjected to modern archaeological research in the Netherlands. This happened in 1912. Both graves date from the same period. The special feature of dolmen D20 is that most of the wreath stones that were originally at the foot of the hill have still been preserved. Cycling further you will pass the remains of Motte Gieten. A motte-and-bailey castle is a type of castle from the Middle Ages, usually made of wood and built on a landscaped mound of earth: a motte. A defense fortification was built on that hill. The earth for the mound often came from the moat that was dug around it.
