Hollands Kroon, North Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 117034
Provided by: Gemeente Hollands Kroon
This route takes you through Hollands Kroon, a beautiful region in North Holland where villages such as Den Oever and Wieringerwaard are located. You will enjoy beautiful views and the former island of Wieringen.
On Wieringen
Wieringen was an island in the Zuiderzee for centuries. In 1924, the island was 'linked' to North Holland by diking and reclamation. From the moraines in this area you have beautiful views over the low-lying polders, the Amstelmeer, the IJsselmeer and of course the Wadden Sea. There are still a few boulders on the former island, and here and there you can also see some authentic garden walls of about one meter high that served as a boundary fence.
Robbenoordbos
You cycle a bit through the Robbenoordbos, which was planted in the 1930s with oak, alder and beech. Wieringerwaard was once located on the Zuiderzee, but is now a picturesque village in the middle of the polder. Here you will see the White Church from 1865. A little further on you will pass the Polder House, which was the first built in the village in 1612. At Restaurant Basalt you can have a coffee, lunch or dinner with a view of the fishing port.
Turbulent Wieringen
Wieringen has a rich and eventful history. In the ninth century, the island briefly served as a base for Danish Vikings. Ships returning from the East during the VOC period deployed sick sailors ashore on the west side of Wieringen - almost within sight of the ports of Enkhuizen, Hoorn and Amsterdam. This quarantine was intended to prevent diseases from spreading on shore. After the First World War, Wieringen served as a place of exile for the refugee German Crown Prince Wilhelm from 1918 to 1923. The story goes that blacksmith Jan Luyt from Hippolytushoef taught the crown prince how to forge horseshoes. Would you like to cycle around Wieringen again? Then also drive route 117035.
