Cycle along the banks of the Markermeer, which is 700 square kilometers in size and is located between North Holland, Flevoland and the IJsselmeer. The original plan was to reclaim the Markermeer, just like Flevoland, but because it is an important attraction for birds, that plan met with a lot of resistance. Water recreation was therefore extra stimulated and the Markermeer attracts many water (sports) enthusiasts. You can also enjoy the impressive view that the Krabbersplaat wind turbines offer you; they rise from the water and dominate the horizon. There is always something to see around the Markermeer! You will also visit the Marken peninsula, which is a protected cityscape. The island has a turbulent history with the surrounding water and the residents have always been in a fight to protect home and hearth from the water. Mounds were raised and later the houses were even built on stilts. Marken became increasingly a tourist attraction, especially because of its characteristic houses and traditional costumes. During the route you will also pass the Kathammer polder mill. The octagonal inner gate, which is also called the Katwoudermolen and was probably built in 1650, runs on wind power. In 1896, lightning struck the mill, after which it caught fire and was largely destroyed. The miller's eleven-year-old daughter was killed. A year later the mill was rebuilt and since a restoration in 1986 that year has also been marked on the mill.
