A green oasis stretches out on the banks of the Veluwemeer, opposite Harderwijk. Marshes, flowery grasslands and ponds that form paradises for birds bring a serene tranquility. The Harderbos is young, but already half wild, because the plants grow fast here due to the fertile clay soil. More than sixty bird species, including the kingfisher, oriole, goshawk and marsh harrier, have found their way to the Harderbos. Amphibian populations thrive in the pools and shy mammals such as roe deer, foxes and beavers have also discovered the area. And don't be alarmed when you come face to face with the Scottish Highlanders who graze the area. The banks of the Veluwemeer give your trip an extra dimension. The lake was created in 1957 by the reclamation of Flevoland and is very shallow, on average only 1.55 m. Thanks to the relatively good water quality, many water plants grow there, which attract all kinds of water birds. With all that diversity of flora and surrounded by the whistling and scurrying of the wild animals, cycling through the Harderbos gives you an unmistakable feeling of adventure.
