After the reclamation of the Usselmeer, the Flevopolder not only became a city with varied and controversial architecture, but there was also room for space, fresh air and nature. Recreational areas have been developed in and around Almere and valuable nature has been created. The experimental residential area De Fantasie is located at the southern tip of the Weerwater, the result of a competition with the theme 'unusual living'. On the west side of Almere you will find a small copy of the Oostvaardersplassen, with whimsical creeks and marsh islands: the Kromslootpark. From the western point on the Oostvaardersdijk you can see the island of Pampus in the IJmeer. A wall of aluminum columns in the tight polder land symbolizes the search for the meaning of human existence. The Spoonbill Lakes are located between Buiten-Almere and the Markermeer, named after the spoonbills that settled here after the polder dried up. This protected nature reserve is an important breeding area for water, swamp and meadow birds. The shy spoonbills breed on an island, safe from predators. You drive along the Noorderplassen, after which you arrive at the Koningin Beatrix Park. Despite the enormous growth, a lot of green space has been reserved between the city districts for recreation and nature and green lobes have been created with walking and cycling paths.
