In this most water-rich part of Friesland, we let you enjoy this beautiful area from the shore. Because in addition to the many water sports options, this is a wonderful area for cycling. This cycle route leads you along various waterways and lakes. Views over all the water, but also the farmlands and nature around it are beautiful.
Although everyone always enjoys all this water very much, it can also cause a problem. For example, at high water. Then the oldest working steam pumping station in Lemmer will be put into operation again, namely the Woudagemaal. This piece of world heritage can be visited and is included in the route. This cycle route shows all facets of the Wetter (Frisian for water). Well worth it. Of course there is much more to see and experience besides this.
Herema State In 1466 there was already a stins (stone house) surrounded by a moat on this site. The stins was demolished in 1580. During the Eighty Years' War, a defensive rampart was built here in 1589. Around 1625, a noble house was built on the site of the old stins. It is now used as a town hall. There is a beautiful park around the town hall.
Sweachmermolen The Sweachmermolen in Boornzwaag was built in 1782 by order of grietman jonkheer Frans Julius Johan van Eijsinga. The windmill is an octagonal top turret. The function of the tower mill was polder and corn mill. Due to the construction of an electric pumping station in 1925, the mill lost its function. In 1949, after years of decline, the 'Foundation for the conservation of the Langweerder mill' was established. Since 1998, the mill has been able to pump water from the polder again. The device as a corn mill is still partly present.
A bell tower is a scaffolding of thick wooden or iron beams, in which one or more bells are suspended. A bell tower can be installed at the top of the church or bell tower, but it can also stand alone. Free-standing bell towers were often built because poorer villages could afford a simple church building, but no tower in which to hang the bell. Moreover, the subsoil was soft and peaty, so that subsidence had to be taken into account. This is often the reason in Friesland.
De Kaai Molen de kaai is a corn mill located in Sloten, the smallest of the Frisian eleven cities. The mill is located at the Lemster water gate. The mill is regularly open on Saturdays for viewing and flour sales. This cycle route is offered to you by VVV Waterland van Friesland. For more information about this region, visit
