Description

In this most watery part of Friesland, we let you enjoy this beautiful area from the shore. Because in addition to the many water sports options, this is a beautiful area for cycling. This cycle route leads you along various waterways and lakes. Views over all the water, but also the farmlands and nature surrounding them are beautiful.

Although everyone always enjoys all this water, it can also cause a problem. At high tide, for example. Then the oldest working steam pumping station in Lemmer will be put into operation again, namely the Woudagemaal. This piece of world heritage can be visited and is included in the route. This cycle route shows all facets of the Wetter (Frisian for water). Definitely worth it. Of course, there is much more to see and experience besides this.

Herema State In 1466 there was already a stins (stone house) surrounded by a moat on this site. The stins was demolished in 1580. During the 80 Years' War, a defensive fortress was built here in 1589. Around 1625, a noble residence was built on the site of the old stins. This is now used as a town hall. There is a beautiful park surrounding the town hall.

Sweachmer mill The Sweachmer mill in Boornzwaag was built in 1782 by order of grietman esquire Frans Julius Johan van Eijsinga. The windmill is an octagonal top windmill. The function of the mill was as a polder and corn mill. The mill lost its function due to the construction of an electric pumping station in 1925. After years of decline, the 'Foundation for the Preservation of the Langweerder Mill' was founded in 1949. Since 1998, the mill has been able to grind water from the polder again. The furnishings as a flour mill are still partly present.

A bell tower is a scaffold of thick wooden or iron beams in which one or more bells are hung. A bell tower can be mounted at the top of the church or bell tower, but can also be freestanding. Free-standing bell towers were often built because poorer villages could afford a simple church building, but not a tower in which the bell would hang. Moreover, the subsoil was soft and peaty, so subsidence had to be taken into account. This is often the reason in Friesland.

De Kaai Molen De Kaai is a flour mill located in Sloten, the smallest of the eleven Frisian cities. The mill is located at the Lemster water gate. The mill is regularly open on Saturdays for viewing and flour sales. This cycling route is offered to you by VVV Waterland van Friesland.
