Description

For many, Friesland is a water province, but you will find so many more beautiful things there. This ferry route shows you all facets of the beautiful Frisian landscape while sailing. Along the way you enjoy views, beautiful skies, vast meadows, forests and natural water around you. Along the way you cross the water four times with a bicycle ferry and continue cycling through charming villages.

From village to village
The starting point of this route is in Joure. This place is known for the Frisian clockmakers and Douwe Egberts, who started his first shop here in 1753. From here you cycle further to Akkrum, Terherne and Langweer. Terherne is known to many as the Chameleon Village and Langweer is a vibrant water sports village with a historic village center full of old buildings and centuries-old lime trees. Along the way you will also see various bell towers for which this region is so famous.

The Schweachmer mill
In Langweer you will find the Sweachmermolen or the Langweerdermolen, which was built in 1782. This windmill is an octagonal upper windmill that served as a polder and corn mill. The mill lost its function due to the construction of an electric pumping station in 1925. The mill fell into disrepair and was later renovated. Since 1998, the mill has been able to grind water from the polder again. The furnishings as a flour mill are still partly present.

Discover the culture of Joure
Along the way, take a look at the Joure Museum if you want to learn more about the history of Douwe Egberts, the clock makers and the many crafts that used to be practiced in Joure. Furthermore, many events take place in Joure, such as the Frisian Balloon Festival and the Farmer's Wedding. In short, there is plenty to do in Joure if you feel like experiencing some culture.

You can use four ferries on this route. These ferries are open from April 1 to October 15 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Costs: €1 pp per ferry. For more information, go to:
