Like many other villages in this area, Dwingeloo is a village on a brink. These villages generally originated in the High Middle Ages. The village green was used to keep cattle and the inhabitants planted poplars and oaks. This wood was later used to build houses. The village green was often located in the heart of the village and markets were held there. You start from this picturesque village and cycle into the Drents-Friese Wold National Park. This is one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands. The landscape varies between forests, heathland, drifting sands and stream valley grasslands. Grazers walk on the plains. And will you spot the black woodpecker? Halfway you can stretch your legs at Park Drentheland. Enjoy a delicious lunch on the terrace before starting the return journey.
