From Park Drentheland you can cycle straight into the beautiful nature of the Drents-Friese Wold National Park. The landscape varies rapidly: you drive through coniferous forests, over heathlands and along fens. The vegetation is just as varied, making the animal world here very rich. Heathland, fens, drifting sands and forests are important bird habitats. But you also regularly see deer, hares, rabbits and squirrels hopping past here. In the surrounding villages you cycle past a number of bell towers. These were often built because poorer villages could afford a simple church building, but not the tower where the bell would hang. That is why this became a separate construction, special to see. Take a break along the way at Restaurant Aekingerzand, right on the beautiful Aeckingermeer, or Canadameer!
