Along the mudflats and the North Sea

This cycling tour starts in Oost-Vlieland, the only village on the island. In the Dorpsstraat you can still taste the old and rustic atmosphere. Outside the village is an extensive network of cycle paths. These shell paved paths offer you a wonderful opportunity to explore the island. The forest around Oost-Vlieland is also intersected with cycle paths. If you go on a journey of discovery, you can take a good look at all the shades that occur in the forest or dunes on Vlieland. Predominant are of course the Austrian and Corsican pines. Sitka spruces and alders were once planted in the wetter parts. Also pay attention to the deciduous trees in the forest, including the oak, birch, maple and aforementioned alder. You will then see that the forest has been given a nice varied appearance. Outside the forest, most cycle paths lead through the dunes. Those dunes can be quite steep so that you sometimes have to stand hard on the pedals! While cycling you have a beautiful view from the dune tops over the dune valleys, forests and the Wadden Sea and North Sea. Along the way, for example, a visit to the Oude Kooi and the Nieuwe Kooi is definitely worth a visit. These duck decoys are no longer used as such, but are particularly fascinating as resting and drinking places for the birds. Halfway through the cycle route you will come to the Posthuys, named after the mail that came and went to Amsterdam via Texel and was exchanged in the Posthuys.
