Discover the Texel Landscape

Texel is 'the Netherlands in miniature'; Almost all Dutch landscapes are found here: dunes, forests, heaths, polders, beaches, mudflats and hilly terrain. Texel is particularly rich in animal and plant species. The island is one of the places in the world where the most bird species occur and orchids even bloom on the roadsides. The Hoge Berg, between Den Burg and Oudeschild, was created in the Ice Age. A glacier then left behind masses of soil and boulders here. The highest point is 15.3 meters above sea level. The typical Texel landscape with garden walls and sheep pens is best preserved in the Hoge Berg area. Garden walls only occur on Texel. They are made of turf and serve as a plot divider. The garden walls were constructed because it is not possible to dig ditches in the High Mountain area; they would become dry due to the slope of the terrain. Moreover, there was no wood available for fences on the tree-poor island in earlier centuries. The garden walls form a special habitat where a large number of protected plant and animal species feel at home. The'old land of Texel\\\' is also the part of the island where most sheep are kept.
