Description

This route runs through areas such as the Beverbeekse Heide, the Groote Heide,'t Leenderbos, the Goor and the Vloeten. The nature reserves and special buildings make the route varied. Between junctions 58 and 59 you cycle through the Cranendonck forest. This forest belonged to the core area of Baronie Cranendonck, which arose around 1200 around the castle of the same name. This castle was destroyed by the French in 1673. A white villa was built here in 1899 and the turret was added in 1917. The name of the municipality is derived from Cranendonk Castle. The name would indicate a donk or hill where cranes lived. Unfortunately, cranes can no longer be found in this area, you might see the redshank, the curlew, the godwit or the wagtail. When you turn right at the main road towards the center of Maarheeze, you will find it after about 1.5 km. (on Kerkstraat) two long-fronted farms that may have Teutenhuizen origins. The Teuten were traders who set out on foot to offer their goods and services far abroad. They enjoyed prestige and brought wealth to the Kempen, as can be seen from these farms. Cycle back the same way to continue the route. Cycling to junction 59 you will pass through the De Vloeten nature reserve. This forest region consists of various types of pine and has a rolling character. During the last ice age, wind deposits formed dunes and drifting sands, the so-called dune sweep soils. When you drive straight ahead at junction 36 you will come across the Belgium - Netherlands border. Here you will find the St. Benedict Monastery or the Achelse Kluis. This used to be a home for hermits. Trappist beer has been brewed here since 1998. On the way to junction 216 you pass the'Double pole\\\', a barony boundary marker, there are seven more along the northern border of Cranendonck. At the junction itself you will see the monument'The Electric Wire\\\' which commemorates the First World War. The border between the Netherlands and Belgium was then closed from Voeren to Zeeland with an electric wire carrying 3000 volts. The border was also guarded by German soldiers.
