This route leads from De Jongh Fietsspecialist through the Wormer-Jisp and Nek polders and through the Beemster polder. You'll encounter various historical fortifications along the way. Fort Marken-Binnen was built to defend the Markervaart canal and the banks of the Westwouderpolder and the Stierop canal. Near the fortification are a secondary battery and an inlet culvert, clearly demonstrating its defensive function. It is part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, just like Fort Spijkerboor. This fort was mobilized during the First World War. It also served as a prison for conscientious objectors and several prominent NSB members, and a number of political offenders were imprisoned there. Fort aan de Middenweg still looks impressive, with a beautiful retractable turret with artillery and machine gun positions in the front wall.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
