Description

For those who love water, this 'tour of Giethoorn' is highly recommended. The village was founded in 1230. The name Giethoorn originated from the name Geytenhorn, later Geythorn. These names are derived from the many horns of wild goats, which were found by the first inhabitants of the area. At the time, peat diggers dug canals and ditches to transport the peat. This also created a kind of islands on which the houses were built. Bridges were built to reach those islands. It is not surprising that Giethoorn is now called the Venice of the North. There are all kinds of options to spend some time here, such as sailing in a whisper boat. Get off at Café Restaurant De Otterskooi in the nice Dwarsgracht!
