For those who love water, this'circle of Giethoorn\\\' is a must. The village was founded in 1230. The name Giethoorn originated from the name Geytenhorn, later Geythorn. Those names are derived from the many horns of wild goats, which were found by the first inhabitants of the area. At the time, the peat diggers dug canals and ditches to be able to transport the peat. This also created a kind of islands on which the houses were built. Bridges were built to reach those islands. It is not surprising that Giethoorn is nowadays called the Venice of the North. There are all kinds of possibilities to spend some time here, such as sailing in a whisper boat. Stop off at Café Restaurant De Otterskooi in the lovely Dwarsgracht!
