Papendrecht Mill Route

This route takes you on a journey of discovery along the beautiful villages and forest plots located around Papendrecht and the beautiful polder landscape Alblasserwaard. Park your car at the Tourist Transfer Point at Zuiderstek 18-20 in Alblasserdam, a specially designed place where you can park your car safely, easily and for free. From the main road, signs will lead you to the TOP. Each TOP can be recognized by a large cone filled with stones and there is an information panel on which the signposted cycle routes are listed. A nice starting point of the route is junction 01 near the tourist transfer point towards Papendrecht. The more than 900-year-old Papendrecht is originally a dike village that now has an urban character. We recommend that you interrupt this beautiful route to take a break at De Krom Cozy food and drinks, in the heart of the Alblasserwaard and in a bend in the river Alblas. You continue the route through the Alblasserwaard towards Nieuw-Lekkerland along the banks of the river Lek Nice to visit: the mill run of Kinderdijk The Netherlands is famous for its mills. Today there are still more than 1000 in our country. Nowhere else in the world will you find so many mills together as in the village of Kinderdijk. Around 1740, 19 sturdy mills were built here that have been well maintained and are still in operation. The mills of Kinderdijk have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997. The mills grind the excess water from the Alblasserwaard polders - which are a lot lower than sea level - to the adjacent river Lek. The river in turn drains this water to the (North) Sea. Before you approach the end point of this route, you will come across Souburg Castle, which is definitely worth a visit.
