Your cycling route begins with a cup of coffee at De Pannekoekenbakker Woudrichem. First, you'll cycle to the famous Loevestein Castle. This fortress is strategically located where the Meuse and Waal rivers merge to form the Boven-Merwede. It became instantly famous when Hugo Grotius managed to escape from the penitentiary in a book chest in 1619. Another impressive defense structure is Fort Vuren. This fortress was built in 1844 to protect Gorinchem, as part of the New Dutch Waterline. You'll also pass Brakel Castle, situated in the Brakelse Bos (Brakel Forest). Now, little remains but a ruin. The dammed Meuse is an old branch of the Meuse River. You'll follow this beautiful natural area back to Woudrichem.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
