Castle route from Woudrichem

Your cycling route starts with a cup of coffee at De Pannekoekenbakker Woudrichem. First you cycle to the famous Loevestein castle. The fortress is located in a strategic location where the rivers Maas and Waal continue together as the Boven-Merwede. It became instantly famous when Hugo Grotius managed to escape the penitentiary in a book chest in 1619. Another beautiful defense structure is Fort Vuren. This fortress was built in 1844 to protect Gorinchem, as part of the New Dutch Waterline. You will also pass Brakel Castle, located in the Brakelse Bos. Now little is left but a ruin. The dammed Meuse is an old branch of the Meuse. You follow this beautiful piece of nature back to Woudrichem.
