Around Hoorn and over the dike

We start this cycle route in Schellinkhout on the Zuiderdijk. In the summer, Schellinkhout attracts many tourists thanks to water sports, as Schellinkhout is located on the Markermeer. The town also has a church and town hall from 1765. From Schellinkhout we will take a tour around Hoorn. The attractions of Hoorn are the marina, the Waag, the Westfries Museum, Museum Steam Tram Hoorn-Medemblik, Museum of the twentieth century and Bossuhuizen. Bossuhuizen are three adjacent houses on the Slapershaven. The facade stones of these 17th century houses are like a comic strip: they tell about the battle on the Zuiderzee that the West Frisians fought against the Spanish fleet of Admiral Bossu in 1573. But we also pass the Krijgsman mill, the Kerkepolder, the Saalhof vineyard and Domaine Du Doe. This vineyard was established a number of years ago. This is an experimental vineyard, where an attempt is made to choose from a number of grape varieties, suitable for the North Holland clay soil and weather conditions. This vineyard can be visited by appointment. Before we cross the dike, we first pass the hamlet of De Hulk. Adjacent to this hamlet we find a nature and recreation area of 58 hectares. This consists of an area inside and outside the dike. In the area, cattle and sheep graze on the meadows next to the forest area and the recreational fields. There is also a canoe transfer point in the area, which can be used to transfer from the Markermeer to the polder water. Ultimately we cycle about 8.5 kilometers over the Westerdijk and Zuiderdijk looking over the Markermeer before we arrive at our end point of this route.
