Tour of West Friesland and the IJsselmeer

Your cycling route starts at Hotel Café Restaurant de Vooroever, between Medemblik and Wervershoof. This route takes you through West Friesland. The area is enclosed by the West Frisian Omringdijk, the only monumental dike in the world. West Friesland belonged to Frisian territory for a long time in the Middle Ages, as the residents did not want to submit to the counts of Holland. The Frisian influence can be found in the dialect, the names and the many Frisian bell-shaped farms that you can still see here. The route takes you past characteristic towns such as Hoogkarspel and Hauwert, with its beautiful white fifteenth-century Nicholas Church. Meadows and colorful bulb fields alternate. On the way back you can enjoy the views over the IJsselmeer from the dike at Wervershoof.
