Amstelmeer tour

We start this cycle route at junction 21 on the Amstelmeer. Originally the lake, then Amsteldiep, formed a transition between the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee. In the north it still borders the Wadden Sea, from which it is closed by the Amsteldieperdijk. With the construction of this dike on the north side and the Wieringermeerpolder on the southeast side between 1920 and 1930, the Amstelmeer became fresh water that is no longer connected to the open sea. The Amstelmeer is very popular among water sports enthusiasts; Windsurfing is especially popular there. The relatively new sport of kitesurfing is also widely practiced on the Amstelmeer. In the port of De Haukes there are often sailing boats owned by private individuals who are members of associations: for example WV Amstelmeer. Navy personnel also receive sailing lessons from this port in so-called B2 sailing boats. Here you will also find the Marine Water Sports Association. Finally, there is a yacht wharf in this port. During this cycle route we also pass the villages of Anna Paulowna and Breezand. Just before the crossing of the Lage Oude Veer is WV Anna Paulowna. Ultimately we continue our route over the aforementioned Amsteldieperdijk where we have a beautiful view of the Wadden Sea. The water is fresh on one side and salty on the other.
