Ommen, Overijssel, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 115112
Provided by: Groots Genieten
Ommen has had city rights since 1248 and has been mentioned as a fordable place along the Vecht since around the year 1100. Here you will come across the Den Oordt mill near junction 42. This tower mill is one of the eight remaining hexagonal mills in the Netherlands. The Besthmener mill was built in 1862. You cycle through the Overijssels Vechtdal to Mariënberg. The origins of the village lie in the 14th century when the Brothers of the Common Life built the Hut Mariaborch from the monastery at Sibculo. This hut formed the basis for their work in the peat areas, which were then east of the current village.
