We start this route in Overloon. Overloon is home to the National War and Resistance Museum (now Liberty Park). At the end of World War II (1944), Overloon was almost completely destroyed during the Battle of Overloon (Operation Aintree), a ten-day tank battle that claimed over two thousand lives. Overloon was liberated on October 14, 1944. Between Overloon, Maashees, and Venray lie the Overloon Dunes, which include the Kleffen, Raaij, and Klokkenberg. From Overloon, we cycle through the Overloon Dunes towards Maashees. Maashees lies right on the Meuse River. However, the village's defining landmark is the large compound feed factory. South of the village (towards Geijsteren) are several campsites. Nestled in the woods on the border of the municipalities of Boxmeer, Venray, and Meerlo-Wanssum is the Willibrordus Chapel. It's a wonderful place for walking (Geijsteren estate). The landscape around Maashees is dominated by numerous tree nurseries. Furthermore, on Broekweg, you can find a so-called "air watchtower." (This road is off the planned route.) Via Geijsteren, we reach Venray. Here, we cycle right through the center where we enjoy a delicious snack and drink. We continue our bike ride back to the starting point. Along the way, we cycle through the small village of Merselo. The village is situated on the edge of the Peel nature reserve and about 10 kilometers from the Meuse River. Merselo is characterized by its esdorp (a village with an es-shaped hillside) and is also home to the highest point in North Limburg: the Weverslose Berg. Finally, we arrive back in Overloon.
