Hoogeveen, Drenthe, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 115029
Provided by: Groots Genieten
The history of Hoogeveen begins in 1551. In the town center, particularly around the old cross, you'll still find some of the oldest houses with beautiful facades, such as the House with the Duivengaten (now a restaurant) and the former drugstore with a gable stone from 1703 (now a residence and a clothing store). In the facade, probably the oldest in Hoogeveen, you'll see a stone with the inscription "So God for us is Who will be against us." The Olde Schippershuus is the oldest existing building in Hoogeveen, with a core dating from 1632/1633. This cycle route also passes the De Zwaluw windmill. Tiendeveen owes its name to an agreement that allowed peat to be dug for a tenth.
