Tour of Bourtange, Sellingen and Ruiten Aa

This route starts in Vlagtwedde, in the east of the province of Groningen. This is where the Westerwolde region is located, a former manor. You cycle through a cozy esdorp landscape with beautiful old towns and of course the beautiful fortified village of Bourtange. You also cycle through Sellingen, a beautiful medieval esdorp. An eye-catcher is the village church from 1300. A little further on you pass through Ter Borg, an authentic Groningen hamlet that has managed to retain its original identity. The backbone of Westerwolde is the Ruiten Aa, a stream that has regained its original meanders. You cycle a long way through this lovely stream valley, one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands. You also pass through the forests of Ter Borg. The patch of heather is grazed by sheep and Scottish Highlanders.
