Tour of Bourtange, Sellingen and Ruiten Aa

This route starts in Vlagtwedde, in the east of the province of Groningen. Here lies the Westerwolde region, a former manor. You'll cycle through a charming landscape of esdorpen (es-villages) with beautiful old villages and, of course, the magnificent fortified village of Bourtange. You'll also cycle through Sellingen, a beautiful medieval esdorp. The village church dating back to 1300 is a real eye-catcher. A little further on, you'll pass through Ter Borg, an authentic Groningen hamlet that has managed to retain its original identity. The backbone of Westerwolde is the Ruiten Aa, a stream that has regained its original meanders. You'll cycle a long way through this charming stream valley, one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands. You'll also pass through the forests of Ter Borg. The patch of heathland is grazed by sheep and Scottish Highlanders.
