Description

The Oude IJssel is a tributary of the river IJssel. The river starts in Germany under the name Issel and then runs through the municipalities of Oude IJsselstreek, Doetinchem and Bronckhorst, after which it flows into the IJssel at Doesburg. This route takes you past historic places on the Oude IJssel, such as Laag Keppel, Doesburg and Doetinchem. Historical Laag Keppel In Laag Keppel you will find one of the largest and most beautiful castles in the Achterhoek, namely Kasteel Keppel. The castle dates back to the 14th century. In 1510 it was destroyed during the war between Philip van Bourgondie and Karel van Gelre. The castle was rebuilt in 1582. The next rebuild was completed in 1615. Today Keppel Castle is inhabited by descendants of the 14th-century owner, Van Pallant. Those who would like to visit the castle can do so from April to September (on Thursday afternoons); however, written request to the owner is required. This can be done via Rentmeesterskantoor Van Lynden, Dorpstraat 1, 6672 LC, Hemmen or via info@vanlynden.eu. Hanseatic city of Doesburg Doesburg is a historic Hanseatic city on the border of the Achterhoek, Veluwe and Liemers. The city is located on the IJssel and the Oude IJssel and is well known for its restored city center with fortifications. There are many old buildings such as the Town Hall, Stadbierhuys de Waag, the Grote or Martinikerk and the Gasthuiskerk or Antoniuskapel (14th century) with Gasthuishofje. In the center of Doesburg you will find the Gildehof with various craft shops, the Doesburgse Mosterdfabriek museum and a restaurant dedicated to mustard. On the way from Doesburg to Doetinchem we pass Wijnboerderij't Heekenbroek. This wine farm has a vineyard terrace and an attractive indoor area'De Dobbe\\\' where you can enjoy a piece of the French atmosphere in the Netherlands. Bustling Doetinchem Doetinchem is the municipality in the Achterhoek with the largest number of inhabitants. Nobody has to be bored in Doetinchem. The city fulfills a regional function in many areas and has a city museum, various galleries and three windmills. The city center has grown into an important'shopping center\\\' for the entire population of the Achterhoek. You can relax on the terraces and in the restaurants and cafes. Simonsplein is the center of conviviality. In Doetinchem we also find a Walmolen. This is a windmill that stands on the ramparts of a walled city. As a result, a windmill has free windage. This mill used to be accessible to the city residents when the city gates were closed and the city council had a fixed income from the"tax on the pumping station\\\".
