Description

This route takes you past several beautiful towns in the Berkelland region, such as Eibergen, Borculo, and Neede. Along the way, you'll experience the diverse Achterhoek scenic landscape. Amidst this diverse landscape lie old farmhouses and small villages. Diverse Eibergen: Eibergen, situated on the Berkel River, boasts many sights worth visiting. These include the Labyrinth, the herb garden, the Piepermolen (mill), and the impressive Protestant church in the center of Eibergen. The Mallumse Molen (Mill) starts and ends at the cycle route. This mill, with its lock and restored Muldershuis (mill), recalls the former Berkel shipping industry. Unique Borculo: Borculo has a small but unique town center with numerous specialty shops. The town is nationally renowned for its many museums within its boundaries. The Berkel River has traditionally played an important role in the town. A watermill complex is located in the heart of the town, with the lock for the (former) Berkel shipping industry nearby. Borculo is also the home port of the Berkelzomp, a barge used for tourist boat trips in the summer. For more information, please contact the Borculo Tourist Information Office (VVV Borculo) at +31 545 271966. Achterhoek Windmills After Borculo and before Neede, we pass two windmills: De Ster (The Star) and De Hollandsche Molen (The Dutch Mill). The De Ster sawmill is the centerpiece of Molenerf De Ster (The Star Mill), the only completely preserved sawmill yard in the Netherlands. De Ster mill yard consists of the windmill with sawmill, the miller's house, two servants' houses, and three timber drying sheds. The top of the mill reaches 20 meters into the air. The sails extend another 9 meters above that. De Ster windmill is clearly visible from far and wide. De Hollandsche Molen is located in the hamlet of Lochuizen. The mill as it stands today was put into use in January 1927, after the standard mill that stood there was destroyed on August 10, 1925, by the cyclone that also severely affected Borculo. The De Hollandsche Molen association, in collaboration with the National Support Committee for the "Storm Disaster," oversaw the construction of the new mill. The new mill is named after the association that made its construction possible. The Needse Berg The Needse Berg was formed by the pressure of the glaciers during the penultimate Ice Age. The Needse Berg is a unique monument, well worth seeing from both a geological and natural history perspective. Deposits from various geological periods are found close together at the surface here. From 1825 to 1954, clay and sand were extracted from this moraine, for use in the brick and roof tile industries, among other things. Due to differences in elevation, moisture content, and soil nutrient content, a rich and varied flora and fauna have developed. Starting point: TOP Mallumse Mill, Mallumsemolenweg 114, Eibergen
