Description

This route takes you past various beautiful places in the Berkelland region, such as Eibergen, Borculo and Neede. Along the way you will experience the varied Achterhoek scenic landscape. In the middle of this very varied landscape are old farms and small village centers. Versatile Eibergen Eibergen, located on the Berkel river, has many sights worth a visit. You will find the Labyrinth, the herb garden, the Piepermolen and the impressive Protestant church in the center of Eibergen. The starting point and end point of the cycle route is the Mallumse Molen. This mill with lock and restored Muldershuis is reminiscent of the former Berkelschipperij. Special Borculo Borculo has a small but special center with numerous specialty shops. The town is nationally known for the many museums located within the municipal boundaries. The Berkel river has traditionally played an important role in this city. In the middle of the center is a water mill complex with the lock for the (former) Berkel shipping nearby. Borculo is also the home port of the Berkelzomp, a barge used for tourist trips in the summer. For more information about this, please contact VVV Borculo, telephone number 0545 271966. Achterhoekse Mills After Borculo and before Neede we pass two mills, De Ster and De Hollandsche Molen. De Ster sawmill is the center of Molenerf de Ster, the only completely preserved sawmill yard in the Netherlands. Molenerf de Ster consists of the windmill with sawmill, the miller's house, two servants' houses and three wood-drying sheds. The top of the mill reaches up to 20 meters in the air. The blades are another 9 meters above that. Mill De Ster is clearly visible from far away. De Hollandsche Molen is located in the hamlet of Lochuizen. The mill as it stands today was put into use in January 1927 after the standard mill that stood there was destroyed on August 10, 1925 by the cyclone that also severely hit Borculo. The De Hollandsche Molen association, in collaboration with the National Support Committee"Storm Disaster\\\", took care of the construction of the new mill. The new mill is named after the association that made its construction possible. The Needse Berg The Needse Berg was created by the pressure of the glaciers during the penultimate Ice Age. The Needse Berg is a special monument that is very worthwhile both geologically and in natural history. Deposits from different geological periods come close together to the surface here. Clay and sand were extracted from this moraine from 1825 to 1954, including for the stone and roof tile industry. Due to differences in altitude, moisture content and nutrient richness of the soil, a rich and varied flora and fauna has developed. Starting point: TOP Mallumse Molen, Mallumsemolenweg 114, Eibergen
