Description

Today you will discover the rich history of the Vesting3hoek. First you drive south, where you cross the river and cycle through the village of Brakel to the battery below Brakel. This battery protected the fortresses of Loevestein and Woudrichem against attacks. Loevestein Castle and Fort Loevestein can be seen further along the Waal. The castle and the fort experienced skirmishes during the Eighty Years' War and served as a state prison. Fort Vuren was built in 1844 as a simple, earthen fort. In the nineteenth century it was built with a tower that was only accessible via a drawbridge. You will also pass Heukelum Castle, from 1286.
