Vlietlanden route

Explore Midden-Delfland with this cycle route, offered by the South Holland Bureau for Tourism. You cycle through real old-fashioned Dutch nature: you can expect open water, swamp forest and reed and hay meadows with rare plants in the nature reserve De Vlietlanden. What is special about this area is the fact that it has not been poldered, so that the peat has not subsided and the area is therefore higher than the surrounding polders. The hay meadows are beautiful in the spring and are full of yellow marsh marigold and purple cuckoo and lady's smock, but the animals also like to live in this environment. About eighty pairs of blue herons, but also Egyptian geese, tufted ducks, lapwings, black-tailed godwits and various birds of prey breed between the trees and in the bushes at the water's edge. The presence of the northern vole, an endangered mouse species, makes the area extra special. When you cycle the route and start at TOP Maasland, do not miss the Foppenplas. Behind the islands in the lake, a marshy area has formed. Reeds, yellow iris and bulrush grow here. The water is full of fish and amphibians and the many sailing boats that you see in the summer provide extra atmosphere.
